Run Mango Football Club in Bakau, as described by many young players, is one of the best and most organised teams in the town. They are not only known for their performances in the game of football but also for transforming the lives of many young players from the grassroots to professional level.
In an interview with Pa Gassama the team coach, he said the club was established in 1998 with the idea coming from one Musa Njie of Bakau New Town. He said the name came from the mango tree they used to sit under to brew ‘Attaya’.
Gassama added that that the idea was to help the young talents in the area that did not have the chance to showcase their talents at the community level.
The team qualified for the Bakau Nawettan in 1999 and went on to produce talents like Ousman Jallow, Ebou Bojang, Assan Jatta, and Lamin Jallow, who have all gone on to represent The Gambia at international level.
“We are proud to say that we won five league trophies and three knockout cups within a five-year period and will continue to excel and produce lots of professionals for this country,” he affirmed.
Gassama applauded the efforts of their former players who are currently playing abroad for the support to the team. “We really appreciate the efforts of Ous Jallow and others players; every year they send us jerseys and small money to run the affairs of the team,” he concluded.
