Ex-Indian President A. P. J. Abdul Kalam once famously said: “Let us sacrifice our today so that our children can have a better tomorrow.” Therefore, any effort seen towards this direction must definitely be commended irrespective of our individual or collective differences.
This is why we would like to commend the First Lady of the Islamic Republic of The Gambia, Her Excellency Madam Zineb Yahya Jammeh for her indefatigable efforts as a defender of children and women rights in the country.
We have seen the First Lady personally involve in social activities that are dear to her heart but at the same time playing integral roles in the socio-economic development of the country. She has engaged in those ventures even before the establishment of her Operation Save the Children Foundation and the OSCF has only gone to amplify those efforts.
The activities of the First Lady and her Foundation are too many that we wouldn’t even attempt to quantify them one by one but there are few that are worthy of mentioning. Among these includes the oversees medical treatment of seven children that recently returned from Israel where they underwent life-saving heart operations.
The First Lady has also in the past championed the campaign to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and an end to child marriage in the country and these initiatives have yielded dividends as The Gambia did not only ban the practices, it went further to criminalise the acts. We have also seen that in the height of the latter campaign when her Foundation gave scholarships to victims of child marriage for them to return to school and complete their basic education.
Based on these activities of the First Lady, any effort directed to the Foundation is a money well spent as it is geared towards laying the solid foundations for our children to thrive tomorrow.
Therefore, as we commend the First Lady for her assiduous efforts, we would also like to commend those that participated in this week’s fund raising gala dinner. We say Thank You!
