V-2016 Initiative Inspires Dimbaya Youth

Young people of Dimbaya village in Kombo Central District of West Coast Region are responding positively to President Jammeh’s vision 2016 initiative. The youth at the weekend turned out in their numbers to remove weed at one of President Jammeh’s Dimbaya farm, led by their youth leader Momodou Lamin Badjie.

Speaking to Daily Observer during the exercise, the youth leader Momodou Lamin Badjie said the young people of the community were inspired by the President’s ‘back to the land’ call for Gambians to ‘eat what they grow and grow what they eat’. Aside from that he said the proceeds from the President’s farms are ploughed back to the Gambian people.

“Every Gambian benefits from it; either directly or indirectly. This is why we the youth of Dimbaya are taking the lead role. We have been cultivating rice throughout the past years and now we are thinking of diversifying, going in for other varieties of crops,” he said.

According to Badjie the secret behind the unity among young people in his community is interaction and communication.

“I personally use my own resources by organising sport competition (i.e. football tournaments), and provide teams with footballs and jerseys; something the youth are very much interested and appreciative of, especially during Nawettan season. As I am speaking to you right now, we have a football match from here to be competed by two teams in the village; so it’s about interaction, it brings about unity,” he said.

He revealed that it is in their plans to expand their farming undertaking. “We are ready to do farming even in the dry season if we have the means like borehole and irrigation system to facilitate access to water,” he said.

Also speaking in this Daily Observer interview was Fally Jarju Demba, Chairman of Dimbaya Village Development Committee. He underscored the significance of the exercise, describing it as a step in the right direction.

“Considering the so many benefits of ‘grow what you eat and eat what you grow’, it is in our own advantage and we will never relent in our efforts to continue the good work and support any initiative sanctioned by our dynamic President, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh Babili Mansa”.
