Zurich FC of Tallinding Kunjang

Zurich FC of Tallinding Kunjang

Established in 1999, Zurich FC is a team based in the Sicap suburb of Tallinding Kunjang. The team was set up through the suggestion of one Amadou Jallow, alias Kaw.

The name Zurich came up through the suggestion of one of the elders in the team called, Darbo Kebba and it is named after a city in Switzerland. The team was first called ‘Dukula’, a flour grain used in making porridge.

Jallow came up with the idea of setting up a team for the Serrekunda East Nawettan and even though friends initially attempted to discourage him for the lack of players and funds, one Alieu Badjie volunteered to pay the registration fee.

After several failed attempts and a boycott, Zurich finally qualified for the Nawettan proper in 2002 and has gone on to produce players like Gambian international Abdoulie ‘Kenny’ Mansally among others.

Having lost to Abuko United in the 2003 finals following a replay, the first time such happened in the Serrekunda East Nawettan, Zurich won its first trophy the following year after defeating Kantehs FC of Tallinding Medina. They won the Super Cup that year as well.

Recently, the team is renamed Zurich RSL in paying homage to the club’s most successful player, Mansally, currently playing for Real Salt Lake. Real Salt Lake is also the sponsor of the team and thus the full name Zurich Real Salt Lake.
