Bekai Samateh, a businessman residing in Brikama Misira last week testified as the third prosecution witness in a two-count charge of obtaining money by false pretence and breach of peace against one Landing Jarju before Magistrate Isatou Janneh of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court.
Landing is alleged to have sometime in the month of May, 2014 at Brikama Daru Hairu, intent to defraud, obtained D30, 000 from one Adama Jarju on the pretext that he would split timber wood for him, a presentation that he knew was false.
He is also alleged to have acted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace on 19th February 2015, at Brikama Police Station and thereby committed an offence.
In his testimony, Samateh told the court that he was at work on the day of the incident when the first prosecution witness called and informed him that he (Samateh) and the accused had a work to conduct in Foni, which involved providing two trips of wood. He said one of the trips belongs to one Sulayman and the other one was for one Adama.
Samateh said they did the work until it remained with the final trip when the accused said they should go home until things were settled. He said the accused was in a dispute because he used to send Sulayman to receive money from Adama. He said each time Adama gave money, he (Samateh) s put in picture.
He said the total amount was up to D30, 000 but it was paid in instalment. Samateh said before the second instalment of D15, 000 is paid, the accused promised to settle Adama in two weeks but he never honoured his promise.
During cross-examination, Samateh told the court that he went twice to see the wood where he discussed and agreed with the accused on D10, 000 for each trip.
Police prosecutor Sergeant 2294 Jammeh then applied for an adjournment to enable him call the next witness. The matter is adjourned to 25th June.
