Gambians have been lauding a renowned philanthropist and business tycoon, Momodou Turo Darboe for his recent donation of rams to needy families in the country.
Darboe through his local NGO Vision Development Foundation (VDF) in the just concluded Muslim feast of Eid-ul Adha, locally called ‘Tobaski’ in The Gambia, donated over 900 rams to needy Muslims in the country.
The NGO has been operating in the country since 2006.
The distribution was attended by various mosque committees, religious leaders, elders and less-privileged.
Imam Baraham Jobe of Serrekunda Central Mosque, praised Darboe for what he called his championing of the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammed (SAW) and for being caring to Muslims.
The occasion, he said, enables those who are able to help the less-privileged to do so, saying the Almighty Allah would reward such people for their deed.
Imam Jobe urged all those who are blessed with wealth to emulate Darboe’s magnificent gesture.
For his part, Saihou Fofana, VDF Public Relations Officer, said the local NGO is out to complement the efforts of the Gambia Government and to support the less-privileged in society.
Giving a brief background of the NGO, Fofana said since its inception in 2006 VDF has been engaged in many activities, including giving out Ramadan gifts, cows and bulls to communities, scholarships to students; and also supported community development initiatives like giving out foodstuff such as rice and sugar to the needy. According to him, the NGO is an open organisation that knows no bounds when it comes to giving out support to those who need it.
He noted the significance of the donation, saying it enabled needy Muslims to have ram during the feast in order for them to enjoy as the rest.
Bora Sissawo, a renowned comedian also praised Darboe’s intervention in relieving the burden of buying rams on many poor Gambians, saying a lot of money had been spent in the purchase of the rams. “It is only the Almighty Allah that can reward Darboe for the support he is rendering to humanity”.
Speaker after speaker praised Darboe for his philanthropic gesture and the good things he has been doing for humanity at large.
