An auto mechanic was on Monday arraigned before Magistrate Baldeh of the Bundung Magistrates’ Court charged with stealing.
Ismail Jammeh is alleged to have removed vehicle parts of one Maimuna Jabbi. The parts are said to be worth some thousands of Dalasi.
Testifying before the court, the complainant Maimuna Jabbi said on June 11 this year she contracted the accused to change the engine oil in her car. When the accused collected the car from her, she said she was expecting him to bring it back within an hour, but it took him the whole day. She said she called all the phone numbers of the accused person but they were all unreachable. Later at night, she said, the accused came and claimed that he was busy at work.
The complainant further told the court that when the accused brought the car, she did not use it on that day but when she switched on the car’s engine the following day her husband detected abnormalities in its sound and told her that there was a problem with it.
According to the complainant, her husband called the accused person to come recheck the car but he, the accused, admitted causing problem to it and promised to repair it again.
The witness said the accused never honoured his promise and she decided to report him to the Abuko Police Station where the accused was invited and he admitted that he removed some parts from the car and sold them to one Nigerian.
She said the family and relatives of the accused person later came to appeal for her to forgive him, promising that if he, the accused person, was released from the police he would repair the car as it was.
Upon the family’s appeal the complainant said she went back to the police and asked them to release him but that the accused person never did as promised by his people. This, the witness said prompted her re-lodge complaint to the police.
The case is now adjourned to 19 July for continuation.
