The Gambia’s Foreign Affairs Minister recently paid a courtesy call on Mr. Yang Jiechi, the State Councillor of China at Zhong Nan Hai in Beijing.
Minister Nenneh Macdouall-Gaye accompanied by a Gambian delegation, is in the Chinese capital to attend the Coordinators Meeting on the Implementation of the Follow-up Actions of the Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation.
Mr. Jiechi welcomed the Gambian Foreign Minister in Beijing and reminded her that earlier this year The Gambia and China re-established diplomatic relations, recognising that she (Minister Macdouall-Gaye) has contributed a lot to that.
“I am confident that with the concerted efforts of both sides, we will be able to enrich the bilateral relations and to take it to new heights,” Mr. Jiechi affirmed.
He thanked Minister Macdouall-Gaye and described the Gambian delegation’s attendance of the meeting as highly important. He further expressed delight to have this opportunity to hold talks with the Gambian Minister on China-Africa relations, and in particular China-Gambia relations.
“It is always a pleasure to visit your great and beautiful country and I want to thank you very much for receiving me and my delegation,” Minister Macdouall-Gaye stated with delight.
She told the State Councillor that the recent re-establishment of ties between the two countries was a deliberate action by The Gambia after His Excellency the President and his government had looked into the issue. She added that after a full study, the Jammeh administration realised that it was the right thing to do.
