The Turkish Ambassador to The Gambia has expressed gratitude to the President and the people of The Islamic Republic of The Gambia for the “timely and sincere” statement of support in the wake the recent coup attempt in Turkey.
His Excellency Ergin Soner was speaking on Wednesday at his Embassy in Brufut Heights during a press conference in the aftermath of the foiled coup.
“On behalf of the President and Government and on my own behalf, I would like to express our deep gratitude to the President of the Islamic Republic of the Gambia, His Excellency Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya AJJ Jammeh Babili Mansa, as well as to the friendly and brotherly people of The Gambia for their timely and sincere statement of support and solidarity against this gross terror act. It is quite important to state that The Gambia was one of the first countries around the globe to condemn this heinous coup plot against the democratically elected President of Turkey and its government. Without waiting till the end, it was in the early hours of the incident, when His Excellency gave me few times telephone call instructing me to transmit his message of solidarity with his brother counterpart in Turkey, His Excellency Recep Tayyip Erdogan,” he affirmed.
“Frankly speaking we have never expected the military hardware entrusted by the people to some officers nested within the army forces, could be used against our own people. This was in anyway a kind of a big surprise for everyone. Unfortunately, the modern military hardware, helicopter gunships, jet fighters and tanks and other military armored personnel carriers were used against the Turkish nation.
During the incident, our parliamentary building has been bombarded many times and our presidential palace was attacked. So many civilians and some security officers were killed by those modern weaponry that were bought from the taxes of the Turkish people and entrusted to those members of the Armed Force.”
On measures the Turkish government is putting in place to ensure that incidents like this do not happen again, Ambassador Soner maintained that one of the positive measures is that the Turkish people have already proven to the international community that they are jealous about their own human rights and democratic order.
“Upon the call made by the President most people took to the streets to reclaim their own democracy. It should be mentioned that majority of the Turkish Armed Force did not support the attempted coup plot.
Also, all the civil society groups kindly and courageously reacted to the coup attempt. Of course the Turkish government has to take some measures not to witness any repetition similar to this terror act in the form of coup attempt against a democratically elected government and this process has already started,” he added.
